2017 Papago 900 Halloween Shoot Recap

The final Papago 900 of 2017 is complete. Thank you to everyone that attended and participated in making the Halloween Shoot another successful event for the Papago Archery Club.

We had a total of 28 divisions competing this past weekend with the Compound Senior Male and Recurve Cadet Female divisions having the greatest number of competitors.

The top score of the tournament was an 879, shot by Kiel Amundson, in the Compound Cub Male division. He was followed by a tie of 872 shot by Preston Adkins and Zac Neilson that was settled by the difference of only one 10! Excellent shooting guys!

The top performer of the Compound Senior Male division was Steve Longshore with an 870 and a whopping 65 tens!! Top Recurve score of the tournament was shot by Yeoman Max Mitchell with an 820. The top Barebow score belonged to Ron Shinn with a 619.  Wow!

Honorable mentions go to Recurve archers Waylon Hjerpe, Adam Vainauskas  and Zoey Wapniarski for obtaining scores in the high 700s. Compound archers Steven Belzner,  Sean Kerby and Kolbe Borrelli all achieved stellar scores in their divisions too.

We were so impressed by all of the creativity and participation in the Costume Contest this year. There were 9 categories up for grabs in the contest. All of the competitors and spectators were encouraged to vote during the first 2 rounds of the competition. Votes were then tallied and awards were presented at the end of the competition.  Thank you to Tournament Director, Kelsey Lard, for the spooktacular custom trophies this year!

We can’t express enough how grateful we are to the community for continuing to support our tournaments and helping us raise the funds needed to sustain our club, maintain the range and support the community. Thank you for such a successful year!

A huge shout out to our awesome crew of volunteers that help make these events run so smoothly. Kelsey Lard, Kevin Ikegami, Lester Chin, David Smith, Dennis Mowery, Jocelyn Horton, The Wapniarski Family,  Chris Amundson, Jennifer Hjerpe and the rest of you (that I may be forgetting – I do apologize). Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

2017 Spring Papago 900 Recap & Results

The first Papago 900 of the year was held on May 6th, 2017 at the Papago Archery Range.  We had 59 registered archers this year, including one of India’s State archers, an archer from New Mexico, and 9 different Arizona clubs represented. The temperatures were very pleasant for the Spring 900 with highs in the low 90s. The wind presented a little bit of a challenge for the archers and spectators during the 2nd and 3rd round, however, there was no need to delay or cancel shooting due to weather.

The Papago tournaments are known for being excellent first time tournaments to new competitors, but our events are favorable to many seasoned archers each year as well. With each tournament we have the opportunity to meet new archers, answer questions, take advantage of teachable moments and foster healthy competition among the seasoned archers too. Papago Archery takes pride in providing these opportunities and is always grateful to everyone that takes the time out of their weekend to support our shoots.

This year we saw the largest turnout yet in the Recurve Senior Male division with 9 competitors. This division had the only tied 1st place score that was decided by the greatest number of 10’s shot.   The highest total score of the tournament (874!!) was achieved, by Wade Flake, in the Compound Senior Male division. The top youth scores shot included an 871 by Zachary Neilson (Compound Cub Male) and an 870 by Cole Lickfeldt (Compound Yeoman Male).  A couple other honorable mentions include Robyn Repp with an 867 (Compound Senior Female) and Kiel Amundsen with an 860 (Compound Cadet Male). Excellent shooting archers!

Thank you to our Tournament Director – Kelsey Lard, co-coordinator and DOS – Kevin Ikegami, Judge – Lester Chin and ALL of the Papago club members that volunteered as field crew, concessions and all the other areas that are necessary to make a tournament run!! (Jocelyn, Jon, Dennis, Melanie, David, Derek, Ron, Julie, Kristy, Nick…so many I’m bound to miss someone – sorry!)

Please make sure to keep an eye out for our final Papago 900 of 2017 in October – the Fall 900 Halloween Shoot (October 28th, 2017).

2016 Papago 900 ‘Halloween Shoot’ Recap

The annual Halloween Shoot this past weekend, at the Papago Archery Range, was a big success. There were 65 archers shooting, having fun and competing. Several archers and spectators arrived in costume to show off their holiday spirit and the range had some spooky & fun decorations to add to the festivities.

Thanks to the recent range improvements that were completed, the archers were able to tolerate the unseasonably warm temperatures by shooting in the shade! The new canopy was a hit and enjoyed by all of the archers, while at the shooting line and during the breaks.

We started the tournament off with the national anthem, thanks to the use of a new PA system that also allowed us to have an audible timer system. The archers had music to listen to and we were able to provide announcements that everyone could hear. The shoot ran extra smooth thanks to these new enhancements.

Our top archers for the day were all from compound divisions ranging between Cadet to Master 60 Men. Tom Pollei finished the day only 25 points down with an 875! Cadet archer, Sean Kerby, was not far behind with an 870 and Larry Butterfield shot a whopping 869 in the Masters 60 division. Nice shooting guys!

Our Recurve Senior Men division was the largest division of the day and had the highest recurve score of the tournament with an 838 shot by Kevin Hubbard! Cadet archer, Zoey Wapniarski, shot the 2nd highest score of 792 and John McCurry in our Masters 60 division finished with a 781.  We had some amazing recurve shooters competing this weekend.

Although many of our barebow archers didn’t have competitors in their individual division, they all did a great job competing against their personal bests.  Our very own, Ron Shinn, topped the Barebow charts with a 633 in the Masters 60 division. Bowman archer, Cullen Bing, shot a 628 and Melody Richards rounded out the top three with a 462. Way to shoot straight!

We want to give a shout out to all of the clubs that take the time to help promote our events to their members, encourage their new archers to try out some friendly competition and help us provide the opportunity to teach new archers how a tournament works. We enjoy hosting these tournaments for the archery community. Without the archers, spectators, coaches & volunteers – it wouldn’t be possible.

Thank you, thank you to all of our volunteers on the field crew (Lester Chin, Jocelyn Horton, Dennis Mowery, Ron Shinn, David Smith, Chris Mussman, Zoey Wapniarski, and Nick Wapniarski) for coming out early and getting things set up, in the dark! Thank you to our concession stand volunteers – Melanie Mandelin, Mary Kirchmann, Jennifer Hjerpe, Willow & Macey – for making it possible for PAA to offer cold beverages & snacks to the archers & spectators.  Thank you to our judge, Chris Amundson,  for guiding the new archers, keeping everyone safe & all of your help throughout the day. Last, but not least, A BIG thank you to our tournament coordinators & directors (Kevin Ikegami, Kristy Wapniarski and Kelsey Lard) that bring it all together and make these events possible for us to host.

A complete list of the archer’s scores from the tournament can be found here in the FINAL RESULTS.

Papago Spring 900 Recap & Results (May 9, 2015)

papago900

PAA welcomed 71 archers to the range on Saturday, May 9th, 2015, for our first 900 Round tournament of the year. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather throughout the day. The tournament began promptly at 7:30 AM and wrapped up by 2:00 PM after the awards ceremony.

We want to thank all of the participating archers, coaches & spectators present that truly made this a fun, safe and welcoming environment for all that were shooting. There were several first time archers shooting that were able to learn from their experience in this tournament. It was such a joy to watch the transformation of these youth archers as they grew more confident with their shooting, arrow calling, scoring and even arrow pulling abilities as the day went on.

We wouldn’t have been able to host this fun shoot for the archery community without the many volunteers that came together to help out. We want to thank each and every one of you that donated your time, expertise and labor to help make this the successful tournament that it turned out to be!

We welcome any feedback that you may have for consideration in the future Papago 900 tournaments we will be hosting. Please feel free to contact Kristy with your comments.
