2017 Papago 900 Halloween Shoot Recap

The final Papago 900 of 2017 is complete. Thank you to everyone that attended and participated in making the Halloween Shoot another successful event for the Papago Archery Club.

We had a total of 28 divisions competing this past weekend with the Compound Senior Male and Recurve Cadet Female divisions having the greatest number of competitors.

The top score of the tournament was an 879, shot by Kiel Amundson, in the Compound Cub Male division. He was followed by a tie of 872 shot by Preston Adkins and Zac Neilson that was settled by the difference of only one 10! Excellent shooting guys!

The top performer of the Compound Senior Male division was Steve Longshore with an 870 and a whopping 65 tens!! Top Recurve score of the tournament was shot by Yeoman Max Mitchell with an 820. The top Barebow score belonged to Ron Shinn with a 619.  Wow!

Honorable mentions go to Recurve archers Waylon Hjerpe, Adam Vainauskas  and Zoey Wapniarski for obtaining scores in the high 700s. Compound archers Steven Belzner,  Sean Kerby and Kolbe Borrelli all achieved stellar scores in their divisions too.

We were so impressed by all of the creativity and participation in the Costume Contest this year. There were 9 categories up for grabs in the contest. All of the competitors and spectators were encouraged to vote during the first 2 rounds of the competition. Votes were then tallied and awards were presented at the end of the competition.  Thank you to Tournament Director, Kelsey Lard, for the spooktacular custom trophies this year!

We can’t express enough how grateful we are to the community for continuing to support our tournaments and helping us raise the funds needed to sustain our club, maintain the range and support the community. Thank you for such a successful year!

A huge shout out to our awesome crew of volunteers that help make these events run so smoothly. Kelsey Lard, Kevin Ikegami, Lester Chin, David Smith, Dennis Mowery, Jocelyn Horton, The Wapniarski Family,  Chris Amundson, Jennifer Hjerpe and the rest of you (that I may be forgetting – I do apologize). Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

The PAA Board of Directors had the privilege of presenting, club member, Lester Chin with an award for his valuable contributions and generosity over the years. Lester began his archery journey, with Papago, when  he participated in the Beginners Archery Course almost 5 years ago. After completing the course, Lester joined the Papago Archery Club as a recreational archer. Since then, Lester has completed his Level 3 Coaching Certification and Judges Certification.  He is now one of our regular coaches for our Intro to Archery and Beginners Archery Course, hosted at the range. In addition, Lester can be found in the official red shirt & khakis uniform, as judge, at many of the Arizona tournaments when he is not competing himself.

Anyone that has had the good fortune of shooting at the Papago range, whether they are a member or not, has had the pleasure of meeting Lester. He is always there to lend a helping hand no matter what he is in the middle of doing. He takes the time to organize fun shoots for the club, offer assistance with setting up or breaking down, he’s always part of the field crew during the Papago 900 shoots and if there is ever a range project that needs volunteers…Lester is there. He is truly the best ambassador for Papago Archery that anyone could ever ask for.

Many, if not all, of our club members have their own special stories and memories that include Lester. He has been such an integral part of the PAA community. We are all so grateful to have him as part of the club and honored to call him our friend.

Thank you, Lester, for all of  the hours of service that you have given. It is because of your example, encouragement and positive energy that Papago has been able to flourish into the club we see today. We can’t imagine a Saturday or Sunday morning at the range without seeing your smiling face!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Do you have a special memory or message that you’d like to share about or with Lester? Please post a comment below.

2017 Spring Papago 900 Recap & Results

The first Papago 900 of the year was held on May 6th, 2017 at the Papago Archery Range.  We had 59 registered archers this year, including one of India’s State archers, an archer from New Mexico, and 9 different Arizona clubs represented. The temperatures were very pleasant for the Spring 900 with highs in the low 90s. The wind presented a little bit of a challenge for the archers and spectators during the 2nd and 3rd round, however, there was no need to delay or cancel shooting due to weather.

The Papago tournaments are known for being excellent first time tournaments to new competitors, but our events are favorable to many seasoned archers each year as well. With each tournament we have the opportunity to meet new archers, answer questions, take advantage of teachable moments and foster healthy competition among the seasoned archers too. Papago Archery takes pride in providing these opportunities and is always grateful to everyone that takes the time out of their weekend to support our shoots.

This year we saw the largest turnout yet in the Recurve Senior Male division with 9 competitors. This division had the only tied 1st place score that was decided by the greatest number of 10’s shot.   The highest total score of the tournament (874!!) was achieved, by Wade Flake, in the Compound Senior Male division. The top youth scores shot included an 871 by Zachary Neilson (Compound Cub Male) and an 870 by Cole Lickfeldt (Compound Yeoman Male).  A couple other honorable mentions include Robyn Repp with an 867 (Compound Senior Female) and Kiel Amundsen with an 860 (Compound Cadet Male). Excellent shooting archers!

Thank you to our Tournament Director – Kelsey Lard, co-coordinator and DOS – Kevin Ikegami, Judge – Lester Chin and ALL of the Papago club members that volunteered as field crew, concessions and all the other areas that are necessary to make a tournament run!! (Jocelyn, Jon, Dennis, Melanie, David, Derek, Ron, Julie, Kristy, Nick…so many I’m bound to miss someone – sorry!)

Please make sure to keep an eye out for our final Papago 900 of 2017 in October – the Fall 900 Halloween Shoot (October 28th, 2017).
